Welcome back to Term 2!

Apologies for not having had the time to post anything up on here for the first week. It was incredibly busy and saw us going to the Sikh temple in St George. The children were wonderfully behaved and really enjoyed themselves. We then put everything we had learnt into various different ways to present this information which was done in the 'Faith Fayre' last Friday. This was a great success and saw over 50 parents turn up to see what the school had done so thank you for coming along. This week we have been getting prepared for remembrance day yesterday. this involved us, alongside year 6, going to the church in Bitton where we remembered those who have sacrificed their lives in combat around the world. The children had decorated wooden crosses for the cenotaph in the church yard and performed a poem and sang a very touching song.

Hello this week year 5 have been learning about colons: and semi colons ; we learnt how to use them in sentences for instance I had a glass of orange juice: mum had of a cup of tea.                                                                                                                                                                                 Fractions

In maths we learnt about  mixed number fractions and top heavy fractions. we now know how to turn mixed numbers into top heavy fractions, and the other way around. (the inverse).

Poems

In guided reading we looked at poems and how they made us feel along with how they were structured. we looked for as many features as possible. We loved the one about the rapping gran!

WEB UPDATE 6.1.17 - WORDS BY RILEY

This     This week (3.1.17) In English we have been learning                       about the main points of an argument/ debate. We have                 been looking at argument text and highlighting the main                   points of an argument. (for/not). In Geography we have                   been learning about connections around the world that                   we have and have been pinpointing the countries and                     the continents they are in.

13.1.17

What we did in year 5 this week!!!!!

This week in English year 5 have been learning all about how to debate and the language style it needs. Today we had a massive debate and year 5 got a gem award in celebration assembly for the whole class because we worked very well as a team and were good at thinking on our feet during the debate!!

In Geography we were looking at longitude and latitude and how coordinates helped us to find were we want to go. Did you now the Equator is 40,075km long?

This week I thought I would update the class page because I have been so impressed with your children and their attitude to their learning this week. We finished off our argument and debate writing segment this week and started to look at short stories. This lit up the children's imaginations and they have loved writing their own endings to some spooky stories that I had begun to read to them. In maths we have revisited multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000 whilst linking in converting between units of metric measure which we looked at last term. Towards the end of the week we looked at rounding numbers with two decimal places to the nearest whole number. I have been equally impressed with your children's work ethic in Maths as I have in English. Well done Year 5!

On Friday we visited the Life Bus which all the children loved! They asked some great questions and made some very insightful comments as we looked at choices and being able to be assertive rather than passive or aggressive. Harold the Giraffe also made a surprise appearance much to the children's excitement.

Have a nice weekend!

This week saw Year 5 learning about adding decimals, rounding to the nearest whole number and tenth. We also started looking at co-ordinates and translation of shape. In English, Year 5 have been planning and writing their own scary stories, which they have loved. We had the curtains drawn and spooky music on in the background today with the lights off to add a little atmosphere!

Have a great weekend, the spellings for this week are in the usual place below.

Mr B.

Well done to both Aspen and Ethan who both received gem awards this week. Keep it up boys!

03.02.17

Phew!! What a week, it has flown by! - I continue to be very impressed with the children and their attitude towards their learning. This week we have been looking at Line graphs in Maths and using mental strategies to help solve problems. In English we have had a grammar focus on the use of relative clauses in our writing and finished off our spooky stories having edited them.

We have also been making Chinese fans in Art which the children have loved. In amongst all of this has been the usual 144 Club, P.E., Handwriting and Spellings.

To top it off we had a display of our home learning...

Please see the pictures below!

Have a lovely weekend.

Mr B.

p.s. the spellings are in the usual place.

p.p.s. Well done to Ethan who will be awarded his class certificate next week in assembly.
